You don’t need to buy the most expensive windows to get Low-E on them. I would recommend double Low-E coating for you. What makes one window more expensive than another will not necessarily make them better at reflecting heat.

Look at the label in this link: https://www.energystar.gov/index.cfm?c=windows_doors.pr_ind_tested For your area you want to focus on the Solar Heat Gain Coefficient number. The lower the better.

This link explains what that number should be for your region. https://www.energystar.gov/index.cfm?c=windows_doors.pr_anat_window

An awing will always reflect the sun better than glass simply because they are different materials. One is solid and on is clear, so a combination of both would probably be best.

Hope this helps – Brian

The windows are cheap (tract home) looks like a Milgard style vinyl double pane in this link. Question is….if I spend a bunch of money on a high dollar replacement window will it reject the heat or is the only answer to do an awning that keeps the sun from hitting the window.

Thanks!

The house was built in 1991 and we assume does not have very good glass fro keeping out the heat. The back of our home is lovely and cool but as soon as you hit the front room and kitchen you can feel the heat. The picture window is approximately 57″ high X 106″ wide…the kitchen window is 46″high X 58″ wide. Can you give me some idea of what I am looking at to install 2 new heat resistant windows?
Thanks.

Comment on Bay and Bow Windows How Much Are They? by Brian Kiernan http://replacementwindowsadvisor.com/bay-and-bow-windows-how-much-are-they/#comment-2200 Sat, 15 Aug 2015 14:52:57 +0000 http://replacementwindowsadvisor.com/?p=1714#comment-2200 That price is high. Get more quotes. The way to get the BEST DEAL is to price the window yourself from a window supplier like HD or a local lumber yard. Then have a local window installer price out installing the window you provide. Make sure he includes removing all the debris. I’ll bet this will save you $2000.

CAUTION: DO NOT ORDER ANYTHING UNTIL YOU HAVE THE PERSON INSTALLING THE WINDOW VERIFY WHAT YOU ARE ORDERING IS CORRECT!!!

So this is how you should do it:

1. Go to a window supplier with the rough measurements of the window you are replacing and get a written estimate of what you are being quoted with as much detail as possible (DO NOT ORDER NOW).

2. Bring that home and get some quotes from local window installers to install the window. Make sure you show them the written quote you got.

3. Make you selection on who you want to order the window from and who to install it.

4. IMPORTANT! Now have the installer you have chosen verify you are ordering the correct window and window SIZE.

5. Place the order for the window(s) and have them shipped directly to your house.

If you don’t know who to get quotes from to install the window(s) this link will connect you with local reputable window installers in your area. I have no direct connection with them.

DISCLAIMER: If you use the link above the installers are paying for the lead (your contact info). So please only use it if your are serious about wanting someone to contact you about pricing your job. I do get a small portion of the lead fee, but hey, I could have potentially just saved you $2000 :).

Good luck and please let me know how you make out.

Would you guys say that 24 (4 BR 2 story house) double hung vinyl, interlocking replacement windows, most 32″X74″, double paned with double coated low-e glass with 5/8″ argon filled gap, colonial grids, top sash reinforcements, foam filled construction using only new vinyl, guaranteed to never yellow or “chalk”, dual top camber locks, fold out feature, installation includes any repairs or squaring of frames, special foam insulation between frame and window, and a LOT more safety features and bells and whistles, lifetime warranty with a transferable 30 year warranty for $10,200 is a good deal? Even the glass is warranted for life if, say, a lawn mower kicks up a rock and breaks it it’s replaced for free. That’s $425 per window incl install. 2 day completion if 2 workers. 1 day completion if 3 workers. It is marketed, sold, and installed by the manufacturer themselves.
